Li says global digital economy will bring new strategic opportunities to ICT industry

[Barcelone, Espagne, 27 février 2024] At MWC Barcelona 2024, Li Peng, Corporate Senior Vice President and President of ICT Sales & Service of Huawei, delivered a speech on the new strategic opportunities that will open up for the ICT industry in a smart world.

“We are rapidly approaching a smart world,” says Li. “As demands on networks have increased, 5.5G has become a key step on the path to the smart world. 5.5G is expected to enter commercial use in 2024. So, let’s build today’s networks for tomorrow’s applications to advance the smart world. »

• On the way to the commercialization of 5.5G

Li explained that over the past 20 years, informatization and digitalization have brought opportunities worth trillions of dollars to the ICT industry. Higher network requirements are needed for this intelligent world, such as ultra-wideband uplink, real-time broadband communication and full-scenario IoT. This has driven the rapid evolution towards 5.5G which will be able to enable innovative application scenarios and business models. By 2030, the smart economy is expected to be worth more than $18.8 trillion, bringing a new wave of opportunities for the industry.

In China, the Middle East and Europe, major operators have already verified advanced 5.5G capabilities on commercial networks. Their tests cover a wide range of scenarios, including smart connections for people, homes, vehicles and stadiums. Additionally, more and more 10-gigabit smart cities powered by 5.5G are popping up in locations around the world.

At this year’s MWC, Huawei is launching a comprehensive series of 5.5G products and solutions for a wide range of different scenarios, as well as the industry’s first Telecom Foundation model. This model will help operators maximize the value of their networks, particularly in areas such as guaranteed network experience and automated operation and maintenance.

As the evolution of network technology continues to redefine the flow of information and value, and unlocks the power of ubiquitous connectivity, we will soon find ourselves in a fully intelligent world.

• Redefine information flows: AI-powered content drives significant increase in data traffic

Smart technologies are developing rapidly and smart applications are becoming more and more widespread. This has created new opportunities for industries.

In terms of information flow, generative AI is already powering new types of connected objects and scenarios, such as digital humans and smart cars. These new scenarios require better infrastructure, including new cooperative storage and compute models between cloud, devices and devices. AIGC will enable the creation of more than 100 billion gigabytes of data and generate more than a trillion gigabytes of data traffic. Huawei predicts that in 2026 alone, AI will be used to produce more than 250 billion images and 70 million videos, completely redefining the world’s approach to content creation.

• Redefining value streams: monetizing mobile services beyond connectivity

As the ICT industry sees more innovation in intelligent applications, the demand for reliable network experience across multiple dimensions will increase. In particular, ensuring uplink speed, quality of service and latency will be essential to meet the diverse needs of consumers and industry customers. This will provide carriers with incredible new growth opportunities, unlocking new value streams worth hundreds of billions of dollars.

A Chinese operator, for example, launched a 5G live streaming package to provide guaranteed uplink for seamless live streaming. This new service offering allowed the operator to increase ARPU by more than 70%.

In the transportation sector, another carrier’s new 5G calling services provide real-time precise positioning and mid-call interaction for applications such as auto insurance claims. This allows car owners to complete a one-stop shop for insurance claim filing, on-site investigation, and settlement of road accident claims. This new type of service has helped the carrier successfully monetize the B2B2C market.

• Unlocking the power of ubiquitous connectivity: creating new value for all sectors

High-quality 5G network connectivity helps operators connect more people with more things anytime, anywhere. Cloud phones are a great example of this. With greater bandwidth and lower latency, consumers can play the most computationally intensive online games and use the most advanced work applications well beyond the limits of local device storage and processing power .
