A falling tree on a roller coaster ride left 14 people injured, including two seriously, on Sunday at the PortAventura World amusement park in the northeastern Spanish region of Catalonia, local authorities said.

The accident occurred in the coastal municipality of Vila-seca and left 14 injured, five of whom were hospitalized: “two in critical condition” and “three in less serious condition”, announced the Catalan emergency services in a message on the social network X (formerly Twitter), without further details on the victims.

“An episode of violent winds” caused the “fall of a tree near the attraction” on which “a few branches hit the customers who had ridden” in it, explained the park company in a press release.

A Catalan police spokesperson told AFP that parts of the tree had fallen on one of the “carriages of the Tomahawk roller coaster”, presented as an attraction for children on the park’s website. The regional police, the Mossos d’Esquadra, opened an investigation.
