His road career has already ended, but he has set one last goal – Olympic this one – before calling it quits for good. At 34, Peter Sagan – cycling legend – hopes to qualify for the mountain bike event at the Paris 2024 Games. But the Slovakian faces a major setback. This Friday, he underwent a heart procedure after experiencing an abnormal episode of tachycardia during a mountain bike race on Sunday.

One of the runner’s representatives gave his news to AFP: “Peter is doing well. He will be back on the bike in more or less a week with the same program as initially planned. Everything is under control. » The Slovakian was operated on in a hospital in Ancona, Italy.

Olympic Games objective

Initially, cardiac ablation was considered. This procedure involves making incisions in the heart tissue. This was ultimately not necessary. Peter Sagan’s decision to have surgery was motivated by the measurement of his pulse: up to 200 beats per minute during the most intense efforts.

The Slovak’s objective is to be able to return to competition by mid-March, for a round of the French MTB Cup in Marseille. Peter Sagan has not yet scored enough points to validate his qualification for the Paris Olympic Games. A more than precious sesame in the eyes of the three-time road world champion (2015, 2016 and 2017). To win it, he has until March 26.
