Ducksch mentions the advantages of Werner’s tactics against Stuttgart

Marvin Ducksch was recently exposed to some criticism, but the 30-year-old responded to it on the pitch – in the style of a top goalscorer.

Within the club, the importance of Marvin Ducksch at SV Werder is beyond question, as coach Ole Werner confirmed after the 2-1 win against VfB Stuttgart DAZN. “I’m happy that he’s playing with us and is working very well in the third season. I don’t have to say anything more about it.” Against VfB, Ducksch ended a nine league game and 721 minute goal drought and then shone with a brace.

A double pack that should provide a little more peace after the striker had previously been criticized, especially on social media. At “kicker meets DAZN”, Ducksch himself found clear words and was then explicitly supported by his coach.

After the end of the negative series of seven winless games in a row and now seven points ahead of relegation place 16, the far north is likely to be able to breathe a little, it seems as if the specter of relegation has been banished for the time being. The Green-Whites owe this to a very committed performance, a great defensive performance and also a tactical trick.

Werner had Werder line up in a 3-4-3 with Nick Woltemade and Romano Schmid in the half positions. A system that worked well over long stretches and repeatedly posed problems for Stuttgart. “Nick and I are very similar types of players who always try to accommodate and want to help the team and make fewer deep runs,” Ducksch explained the idea behind it and also pointed out that Schmid comes into his own from deep because he is “always offers depth runs” and would thus create gaps.

We were at loggerheads.

Romano Schmid about Marvin Ducksch

In other words: Woltemade and Ducksch didn’t literally stand on each other’s feet, while Schmid acted as a kind of pacemaker from the center. Ducksch then explicitly mentioned Schmid’s great pass to make it 2-0, saying it was an “outstanding ball” and the Austrian showed a great overview. Schmid returned the compliment, emphasizing how important Ducksch was “when he makes runs like that to make it 2-0.”

Schmid also revealed that he and Ducksch had “clashed during training during the week”, but did not go into detail, instead emphasizing that this had happened “in a good way”. “We were at loggerheads – and today he gave us three points.”

“The boys did well,” Werner praised the performance of the offensive trio, but also admitted that they were lucky in the end. “Against a team like Stuttgart, you also need a bit of luck. We played good football at times, but there was a lot of defending at the back,” summarized the 35-year-old: “I can only take my hat off.”

Schmid is not completely satisfied

“It was definitely a lot of hard work,” Ducksch made clear and praised: “I have to give the boys a huge compliment because there were so many things to defend – and they did really well until the end.”

Schmid, on the other hand, was not entirely satisfied because he was annoyed about the last half hour of the game, in which the Hanseatic League did not provide enough relief. “I have to blame us for leading 2-0 and then stopping playing football.” Against an “opponent as good as Stuttgart” it was painful because they “just had to defend” for over half an hour. Fortunately, in the end “this went well because everyone was there for everyone.”
