US bans Samsung Galaxy Note 7 on commercial flights

by drbyos

The US Department of Transportation issued an emergency order prohibiting passengers and crew from taking Samsung Galaxy Note 7 cell phones on commercial flights, in response to incidents in which the devices caught fire.

The order goes into effect Saturday at noon US Eastern Time. It says the phone cannot be carried on board or in checked baggage on flights to and from the United States or within the country. Cell phones cannot be sent as air cargo either.

The department said that passengers who try to travel with the Note 7 will have their cell phones confiscated and could be fined.

Samsung recalled more than 2.5 million of the phones and discontinued the model this week.

Numerous incidents of phone fires have been reported, including one aboard a Southwest Airlines flight this month.
