After the Legislative Assembly approved with 67 votes in favor the Special Law for Municipal Restructuring, the President of the Republic, Nayib Bukele, signed the law to start the total reorganization of the administrative political division of the country, reducing the municipalities from 262 to 44.
“This day, after the overwhelming democratic vote of the Legislative Assembly, I have signed, and authorized it to become law, the total reorganization of the political-administrative division of El Salvador, reducing the mayoralties of our country, from 262 to 44” , stressed President Bukele.
The Special Law for Municipal Restructuring was consulted with different government institutions and mayors, who said that the regulations will facilitate territorial order and expedite the execution of development plans for the benefit of the majority. In addition, according to estimates by the Ministry of Finance, the new law will generate state savings of $250 million annually and $750 million in three years.
